Chapter Summary: Chapter 7 “Shadows and Tall Trees”

In chapter seven, the boys are returning to the beach after being unsuccessful in hunting down “the beast”, during the journey Ralph is reminiscing about his life before the island and it seems as though he is really starting to feel homesick. He doesn’t like the fact that they seem to be getting used to the way of live on the island. He is interrupted from these thoughts when a large boar suddenly appears and although they are unsuccessful in killing it, they all act out the killing of it using Robert as the boar. They all get a bit too carried away with it, but no one gets hurt. They continue on the hunt, but as the days goes on he boys are divided as to whether to continue on, or go back and join Piggy and the littleuns. Simon volunteers to go back and tell the others that they may not be back before dark and they other ones stay and continue to argue. The main conflict is of course, as usual between Ralph and Jack. Ralph thinks it would be smarter to go back to the beach for the night and continue to search in the morning, but Jack wants to continue on as he is so intent on killing the beast. Ralph is too competitive to continue to push for his way when Jack accuses him of just being too scared to confront the beast, so they continue on. Even though it’s dark; Ralph, Jack and Roger start to actually climb to the top of the mountain-where they think the beast is. Ralph realizes that this isn’t the smartest thing to do since if there really is a beast, 3 boys probably won’t be able to defend themselves. Jack, wanting to prove that he isn’t scared continues to climb without the other 2 boys, but returns quickly saying that “saw a thing bulge on the mountain”. –pg 150, but he definitely didn’t stick around long enough to see what it actually was. So Ralph, not wanting Jack to seem braver than he is, decides that they should both go up to take a better look. But once he sees “the bulge” he ends up running back down the mountain as fast as he can, and they still don’t know what this bulging beast is! One of the significant parts of the chapter is that during all the competition between Ralph and Jack where they are basically daring each other to go to the top of the mountain, and Jack is constantly taunting Ralph is that Ralph realizes that Jack hates him and basically wants to make his life miserable and he realizes that he is starting to hate Jack too. Ralph even asks Jack in the middle of their argument “Why do you hate me?” I predict that Jack and Ralph aren’t going to be getting along any time soon.

Very detailed and you pointed out the most important things going on in this chapter. When I was reading this chapter, I thought about the tittle of this chapter and it kind of gives a small summary of it's own.
