Ch:8 summary "Gift for the Darkness"

Ralph describes the beast as “The beast had teeth…and big black eyes” Jack calls an assembly to ensure the ignorance of Ralph toward Jack’s hunter to everyone. So Jack decides to make a tribe by himself and slowly he pulls all of the boys towards him. Later that evening, he had all the boys joining him at a feast except for Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric and some of the littuns were separated from the others. Since they can not have the fire up on the mountain so Piggy suggests having the fire on the beach, on the ground so that they still have a signal. Piggy was delighted now that Jack is not with him anymore to bully him around. And on the far side of the beach Jack decides to have a feast everyday and had set everyone to specific duties like guarding the tribe, going hunting with him. Simon had left for the examination of the beast up onto the mountain. After Jack and his hunters went for hunting and brought the pig but they had no fire with them so they decide to steal the fire from Ralph. As Jack distracted Ralph with his silly arguments Maurice and Robert then stole the fire behind Ralph’s back. Ralph and other with him can not keep the fire up. They have to take turns but no one can do the job by himself so they skip days because they are too tired. At the mountain, Simon gets hallucinated then he sees a pig’s head stuck on top of a sharp stick-that Jack has left for the beast- Flies all over it as so it calls himself the Lord of the Flies and starts to talk with him. The lord of the Flies is originally the pig talking to Simon. The lord of the flies tells him how he is not needed by anyone and how everyone is acting. That everyone is loosing their relationships, civilization is fading away and Simon sits there and agrees with him.
