Chapter 6 Summary

Chapter Summary: Chapter 6 Beast from Air

Chapter Six begins following a disagreement that the boys had been having about “the beast” and whether or not it exists etc. At this point all the boys on the beach are asleep, or at least trying to sleep; except for Sam n’ Eric who are up on the mountain keeping watch on the signal fire. This means that the boys don’t see what happens in the skies over their Island. There is an explosion, which we assume is a plane being shot down and a parachute starts coming down. The parachutist lands on the island, and is dragged up the mountain by the wind in his chute. The man is dead, but the position in which he lands allows the wind to still fill his chute every once and a while which makes him move around and gives him the appearance of being alive. Sam n’ Eric are the only ones who are awake and while they don’t see the explosion in the sky or the man actually landing on the island, they do see the parachute moving the man around. Unfortunately it’s dark so they don’t see what it actually is; they assume that they are seeing “the beast.” The twins run back down to the beach to tell the others what they thought they saw, of course wildly exaggerating the truth. Of course by this point their signal fire has gone out. The boys argue about whether they should go hunt the beast, and who should go and who should stay behind. Finally, they decide all the biguns will go hunt the beast and Piggy and the littleuns are left on the beach. They don’t find the beast of course, but they do explore a new part of the island that none of them had been to before. Jack really likes it there, but Ralph prefers the beach. This causes tension between Ralph and Jack yet again, and the boys have divided opinions as well. Some want to stay in this new place, some want to keep hunting the beach and some want to go back to the beach. The chapter ends with Ralph getting his way, and the boys setting off to re-light the fire; although many of the boys are not very happy with the decision.

Nice choice of picture, christina! The dead parachutist reminded me of the larger setting of LOTF. In the past chapters, we have seen the boys in the isolated island but I think the author chose to add the air battle and the parachutist so we are reminded of the war going on.

Almost forgot... the remaining power of civilization also diminishes quickly in this chapter( not that i want it to). I think this comes after the boys come to believe fully in the existence of the beast by the dead parachutist.
